While the term doula is recent in history (1960s), the role of a doula is not new. Doulas have always been a part of the ancient and sacred art of women supporting women during childbirth. Our roles as doulas have primarily moved into the hospital setting to support women and families during birth. Birth doulas still support women at home- and birth center births. Women supporting women, whether as midwives or doulas, has a long history globally.
Doulas can be invaluable. While the doctors, the nurses, all hospital staff change shift, your doula will be by your side till you are doing well. Even a partner may have to leave to care for other children, work, or other commitments. We are their for you when others may not be. We are there to support you!
According to the CDC, in 2020 C-sections made up for nearly one third of all births in the United States (31.8% to be exact). That’s hundreds of thousands of families who are left to navigate parenthood with their newborn while simultaneously healing from major abdominal surgery. A birth or postpartum doula is an invaluable resource for these families who often need more help due to physical limitations post-cesarean.
